MAKING ROOM FOR THE NEW
During this overlapping period we must make room for one another so that the old does not quench the spirit of the new, and then, destroy the friendship of the old and the new which is the foundation of the new. The old gives the new a sense of stability for the new vision. Out of the womb of the old, its maturity and experience should be born the vision of the future. If we do not make room for the new vision born out of the fulfillment of the old, the dividing of the power will be turned upon each other for destruction. Instead of the enlargement of God’s divine government upon the earth, we will have anarchy, power fighting power.
After the imparting of the power to Joshua and the establishment of the new, Joshua was no longer considered as Moses’ servant but GOD’S MAN FOR THE HOUR. No man can delegate godly authority. It is established through impartation. Because of the fulfillment of God’s calling in Moses’ life, this new delegation of authority was not a threat to his identity in God but a furtherance of his vision. Joshua’s first official act of exercising his authority was recorded in (Numbers 34:17 & 18). “These are the names of the men who shall divide the land among you as an inheritance: Eleazar the priest and Joshua the son of Nun. And you shall take one leader of every tribe …” Now Joshua was raised up to stand with Eleazar the priest to begin to establish the new even though Moses still lived.
Moses fulfills his call in the last hour as he encourages Joshua to obtain the new vision and to maintain his honor with God to possess the Promised Land. “But Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, he shall go in there. Encourage him, for he shall cause Israel to inherit it.” (Deuteronomy 1:38) This was Moses’ act of full impartation as he was willing to impart through encouragement the establishment of the new. This encouragement required that his heart was pure before God and the nation of Israel, so that his encouragement was with heartfelt hope and joy for Joshua.
I want to briefly reiterate the process of impartation in outline form so that we can see the easy progression.
1. Moses cried out to God to raise up a man to care for the people and to lead them. (Numbers 27:15-17)
2. Moses accepted God’s choice and obeyed His commands. He put Joshua in front of the priests and laid his hands on him. (Numbers 17:22-23)
3. Moses obeyed and gave Joshua “a charge”- an infusion of power. (Numbers 27:19)
4. Moses steps aside to let Joshua begin to exercise authority. (Numbers 34:17-18)
5. Moses imparts his love and recognition of Joshua. He encourages Joshua from his heart. (Deuteronomy 1:38)
The questions we need to ask ourselves as members of the Church of Jesus Christ today are these, “Where are we failing in imparting the ongoing life of Christ to one another? What do we still lack?”
